A break-up is either the worst or the best thing that could happen in a relationship. But regardless of its effect on the two parties involved, we can all agree that it’s one of the most painful, depressing, and traumatic experiences that we will go through.
Notwithstanding if it’s a personal experience or not, we have certainly witnessed a lot of breakups over the years, which include those that we had seen in teleseryes. And in this episode of Kapamilya Time-List, let’s revisit 10 of the most heartbreaking break-up scenes of the best-loved pairs that indeed shattered our hearts.
KathNiel, Got To Believe (2013-2014)
Prior to their heart-rending breakup in 2023, former on-and-off-screen sweethearts Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla already had a taste of it through their well-loved characters Chichay and Joaquin in the 2013 series “Got To Believe.”
They may have had a solid bond as friends and lovers, but Chichay was compelled to end their relationship because of the slew of conflicts that put them to the test. Instead of admitting the truth, she simply told him that she already grew tired of his hallucinations, allegedly caused by the injury he sustained due to a freak accident when he was still a child. In order for her to prove that she no longer loved him, Joaquin dared her to say it while looking straight into his eyes, which she bravely did.
JaDine, On The Wings of Love (2015-2016)
Formerly tagged as “#TeamReal”, former reel-and-real-life couple Nadine Lustre and James Reid truly shocked the nation with their separation in January 2020. But five years before that, they already shattered the hearts of their fans when their characters Leah and Clark in the top-rating series “On The Wings of Love” broke up.
It was Leah who initiated it, since she didn’t want Clark to lose his family just because of her. Besides, she didn’t want to be like her mom, whose decision to choose her own happiness resulted in the destruction of their family. Clark tried to convince her to stay, but to no avail since Leah had already made up her mind.
KimErald, Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin (2017-2018)
Avid supporters of the Kim Chiu-Gerald Anderson tandem were indeed thrilled when the two reunited on-screen in the daytime series “Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin,” several years after calling it quits.
Even though they truly love each other, Bianca had to make the tough decision of breaking up with him because she deemed it necessary. However, she promised to come back, which she signified by returning to him the ring that he had given her. While their exchange was heart-rending enough, the sudden pouring of rain made the scene extra dramatic.
JoshLia, Ngayon at Kailanman (2018-2019)
Before their controversial separation in 2019, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto starred in their first-ever teleserye together, “Ngayon at Kailanman,” wherein they portrayed star-crossed lovers Inno Cortes and Eva Mapendo.
Despite the great love they had for each other, it seemed like it was not enough to fuel Eva to keep fighting for their relationship. Since his family was vehemently against their relationship, this made her believe that it was indeed impossible to happen, so she decided to call it quits with him. Besides, she wouldn’t let her loved ones be the collateral damage just for her to be able to pursue her own happiness.
LizQuen, Make It With You (2020)
Arguably, “Make It With You” could have been one of the best projects of the Liza Soberano-Enrique Gil tandem, yet it was cut short due to the events of 2020. It absolutely had a promising start, with the reel-and-real-life pair impressing us with their promising portrayals of more mature roles, Billy and Gabo.
It can be recalled that they first crossed paths in Croatia, where they became friends, and that closeness eventually turned into a romantic relationship, which was short-lived after Gabo “ghosted” Billy. When they had the chance to see each other again here in the Philippines, Gabo explained to Billy that the reason he suddenly disappeared was because he had already gotten tired of “pretending to be nobody when he’s actually somebody,” since he’s the son of an affluent businessman. He went on to tell Billy that everything they had in Croatia was nothing but fun and games for him, which absolutely hurt Billy since she truly loved him within the short period that they’d known each other.
FranSeth, Dirty Linen (2023)
They may not be together yet in real life, but Francine Diaz and Seth Fedelin already went through a breakup, yet only onscreen, as their “Dirty Linen” characters Chiara and Nico were compelled to end their relationship due to the unpleasant history that their families shared.
As we all know, Nico was the son of Riza Manalo (Liza Diño), one of the former house helpers who was killed by the notoriously powerful family of Chiara – the Fieros – in their pursuit of hiding their deepest and darkest secret. Chiara was initially in utter disbelief and even accused Nico of making up stories until he showed her the article narrating how the crime was executed many years ago. Since they were on the opposite sides, they had no choice but to end their once-sweet romantic affair.
LoiNie, Pira-Pirasong Paraiso (2023-2024)
Just like real-and-reel-life partners Loisa Andalio and Ronnie Alonte, there was also a point in the love journey of their “Pira-Pirasong Paraiso” characters, Baby/Amy and Jonaf, when they were severely tested by the circumstances they encountered.
For Jonaf and Baby, it was when he found out that she was involved in the death of his father – a secret that her family had kept for quite some time. While Jonaf would still help Baby search for her foster parents since it was part of his job as a policeman, he was not keen to continue their romance since, according to him, he couldn’t stomach being bound to a person who could fool him over and over again.
CocoLovi, FPJ’s Batang Quiapo (2023-Present)
Their team-up may be newly established, yet Coco Martin and Lovi Poe already got us rooting for them to become an item due to the irresistible chemistry they exuded as Tanggol and Mokang in the top-rating series “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.”
As we all know, Tanggol has been deeply infatuated with Mokang ever since they were kids. Thus, he was over the moon when she finally reciprocated and agreed to be her boyfriend. However, their romance was short-lived after he got imprisoned for stealing money, while she was forced to marry the affluent drug mogul Ramon (Christopher de Leon), which both happened in their pursuit of raising funds for the hospitalization of her father, Marcing (Pen Medina). This pushed Mokang to break up with Tanggol while he was still in jail, and she wished for him to be able to find another woman worthy of his affection.
DonBelle, Can’t Buy Me Love (2023-2024)
While we’re still waiting for them to finally make things real between them, Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano already broke our hearts when their well-loved characters, Bingo and Caroline, in the series “Can’t Buy Me Love,” ended their relationship.
Those who got to watch it could surely remember that it was due to the mysterious crime that involved both of their mothers. Bingo’s mom, Annie (Ina Raymundo), was being alleged to be the suspect behind the tragic death of Caroline’s mom, Divine (Shaina Magdayao). While Caroline strongly believed that their relationship was too strong not to conquer this setback, Bingo supposed that it would be impossible for them to not tackle the issue. Thus, Bingo thought that it would be better for them to break up to regain peace in both their families.
KimPau, Linlang (2024)
And lastly, not an episode probably passed by without the ardent viewers of “Linlang” being taken on a rollercoaster of emotions as we followed the love story of Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino’s journey as Juliana and Victor.
We may be rooting for them in real life, but not totally for their characters because of how nasty their relationship had become after Juliana presumed that Victor was philandering, more so when one of their two children died due to a freak accident. As much as he didn’t want to leave her and their remaining child after the tragedy, he was compelled to do it since he had to work abroad. But what could have been the start of something new for them turned out to be the conclusion of their once happy life as a family as she grew indifferent towards him and eventually got into an illicit affair with his brother, Alex (JM de Guzman).
