Time after time, we have watched barkada series that were just really worth all the attention and anticipation. Aside from the fact that we get to see our favorite young Kapamilya artists in one show, we also learn a lot from them and from the story itself. There are just too many Filipino series that our parents and grandparents would love to watch again and the iconic teen series Tabing Ilog is definitely one of them.
It was probably one of the most famous teen drama series during the end of 90s up until the early 2000s. This featured the teenage journey of the whole barkada and the issues and challenges they braved as adolescents. And it was titled as such because they often assemble hang out at a river.
Believe it or not, it has already been around two decades since it was broadcast. And from being among the fast-rising teen actresses of their generation, its lead actresses Kaye Abad, Paula Peralejo, Jodi Sta. Maria, and Desiree del Valle went on to become household names in the industry.
While Kaye, Jodi, and Desiree have remained active in showbiz, Paula has walked off the spotlight many years ago to focus on her personal endeavors. Even so, the four of them are all happy and contented with their married lives at present, with Kaye, Paula, and Jodi now taking the path of motherhood.
And in this feature, let’s take a trip down memory lane as we look back on the characters they portrayed on the well-loved series, as well as take a glimpse on their inspiring motherhood journeys.
Jodi Sta. Maria
Portraying the tomboyish Georgina “George” Fuentebella who was paired with Baron Geisler’s Fonzy, Jodi uploaded a vlog last January wherein she reminisced the days and memories they made while still filming the series. According to her, Tabing Ilog is actually the first-ever regular program that she did with ABS-CBN, thus Pagsanjan is a place very close to her heart. It actually served as one of her first projects in showbiz and definitely paved the way for more projects for Jodi. But above all the success that she has achieved in the past years, the greatest would be being a mother to her beloved unico hijo, Thirdy.

In her interview with ABS-CBN Lifestyle last year, she imparted her struggles as a mom and how she has learned to embrace all of them as she strives to be the best mom for her son. She admitted that being a mother wasn’t something that she was looking forward to when she was younger, since she was eyeing to become a flight attendant or a doctor.
Jodi thought that she already knew how to handle almost everything in life, not until her son came and made her realize the most important things in life. The 38-year-old actress disclosed that it was a difficult phase when he had Thirdy because she wasn’t prepared for motherhood. However, since it was a few days before Christmas when she gave birth to Thirdy, she chose to consider his arrival as the best Christmas gift she ever had.
And now that Thirdy is on his teens, Jodi confessed in her Magandang Buhay guesting last November 2020 that she’s actually not ready for his growth.
“Akala ko magiging handa ako kasi alam ko naman e, hindi mo naman mapipigilan ang paglaki ng isang bata, ‘di ba? For me, in my head, ‘ay, kaya ‘to. Pero no’ng dumarating na ‘yong mga changes, taon-taon na nagbi-birthday siya, nakikita ko na ang mga facial hair at kili-kili hair, sabi ko, ‘grabe, ito na ‘to. Right before my eyes, talagang lumalaki na ‘yong bata’. Tapos do’n ko na-realize na hindi pala ako handa,” she revealed.
From charming the viewers as Anne de Guzman in the series, Paula isn’t active in show business anymore. In 2006, she decided to start a new life outside showbiz to go back to school and open a travel agency. She later on tied the knot with her non-showbiz husband Charlie Fernandez in 2013 and they have built a beautiful family together with their son Pablo.

In an article published on PUSH in 2019, she imparted in an interview that she’s not really keen in going back to show business as she wanted to focus more on running their business and in raising her child.
Since the 36-year-old former actress decided on quitting showbiz for good, Paula has been focused on taking good care of her family. Going through her Instagram posts, it’s obvious how she and her family have been travelling a lot, thus she decided to put up her own travel agency. Besides, she has also been busy with vlogging together with her sister Rica Peralejo.
Through her character Eds Delos Santo, Kaye was given more projects after her stint in Tabing Ilog. However, she took a time off from acting when she settled down and got married with her husband Paul Jake Castillo in 2016. A year after, she gave birth to their eldest child, Pio Joaquin, in December 2017.

In her interview with DJ Jhai Ho on Hotspot in 2018, he shared the incomparable sense of fulfillment that she felt when she became a mom. Despite all the adjustments that she was going through as a mother, that was the happiest phase of her life that she’s ever been in. She told him, "Nag-a-adjust pa pero happy. Tama iyong sinabi nila na sulit iyong lahat ng puyat at kung ano man iyong pagod.”
And just last April, the 38-year-old actress took to Instagram to share that they are having another baby boy again. She posted their gender reveal party and wrote in the caption: "Another blessing".
Desiree Del Valle
From portraying the role of the kikay teenager Corrine Ledesma who was paired with Paolo Contis’ Salvador “Badong” Magtibay, Desiree has been happily married to actor Boom Labrusca for three years now, since they sealed their love in an intimate wedding ceremony in California, United States.

She may not be a mom yet unlike her so-stars, but she has already played a number of mother roles in the past years that she has been in the industry.
And recently, her husband Boom, who’s the biological father of young actor Tony Labrusca, recently posted on IG a set of photos of them together, wherein Desiree is seen having a bulge on her belly. While the netizens were quick to congratulate them, he clarified that they’re not pregnant yet and it’s just for a current project they’re working on. He wrote. “If it’s the Lord’s will, it will be done”, giving us a hint that they are already looking forward to be parents soon.
They may have treaded on different paths at present, but it’s delighting to know that the teenagers who used to provide us kilig and relatable stories of family, friendship, and love every Sunday afternoon via Tabing Ilog are now happy with their lives at present.
