You’ve never heard Christmas jingles get rocked out like this before!
Gigi de Lana’s glorious, edgy vocals was a perfect match to the familiar comfort of holiday playlists, plus her signature ‘hugot’ anthems turned out even more soul-piercing in her first YouTube Music Night concert with band, GG Vibes.
Holiday classics, mellow love songs get Gigi-fied!
Introduced by hosts Edward Barber and Samm Alvero, Gigi, decked out in stylish white fur coat, jeans, and knee-high boots that screams ‘holiday vibes,’ appears onstage to belt out a rock rendition of “O Holy Night.” It’s a sultry and soaring performance with Gigi hitting the wild notes with ease – perfectly striking for an opening.
Near the middle of the set, Gigi re-flavors the preppy and saccharine Moira Dela Torre hit “We and Us” in her own taste of upbeat pop-rock but every romantic detail still hits right in the feels.
Even the lullaby-like “Ako Naman Muna” by Angela Ken was rebuilt by Gigi into her unique tapestry of soft rock. It’s a gift you’d want to welcome with open arms.
As the night goes, the Star Magic and Rise Artist Studios talent circles back to her root which is ‘hugot’ love songs, gifting us with a rock-stitched performance of the iconic “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita” that exalted her to an internet sensation.
The whole set was a mix of Christmas and love songs, putting her own spin in “Silent Night,” “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” and “The First Noel” sang in medley; and romantic ballads “Ikaw At Ako” and “Pag-Ibig Ang Piliin.”
A foretaste of her first album
One that served as a splendid ornament to Gigi’s Christmas show is her pet cat, Money, looking so adorable on her lap as she announced the release of her full-length album next year.
Aiming for authenticity in their every song, Gigi mentioned she and the band were surprised they can also create original music. She thanked producer Erwin Lacsa for pushing them out of their comfort zones and helping their first single “Sakalam” reach the top of the charts right after its release just last October. Then, still chilling on a couch with Money, Gigi played the pop-rock ballad that easily became an anthem for heartbreaks.
The ‘sakalam’ performance was then followed by another piece from the album, “Bibitiwan,” a casually cruel love song, the kind that you’d want to play on repeat on days when you’re begging for a real cathartic experience.
The songstress got candid and as if holding back the tears, shared the story behind the next song “That First Night.” It was written by Erwin during Gigi’s lowest point in life – ironically, at the time when she’s starting to make it to stardom.
“Malungkot ako n’un and I felt like things were moving too fast sa career at buhay ko. I wanted a moment away from my bashers and pressure in my professional and personal life. Alam kong marami sa atin ang nakakaramdam ng ganito ngayon pero katulad ko, kapit lang kayo, magiging maayos din ang lahat, pangako yan,” Gigi said.
Captivating chemistry with Jason Dy
Rock and soul combined as Gigi and guest artist Jason Dy owned the chart-topper “Magkasuyo Buong Gabi.” As if the December breeze isn’t enough to make you feel a little romantic, the tandem makes the night swoon-worthy, adding smoky vocal charm and techniques to the latter part of the song.
Then, Jason went solo, dedicating a Christmas song to all those missing someone during the holidays, “Ngayong Pasko.”
Nailing the (holiday) vibes!
Staged in a studio that is awash in December mood, Gigi’s first YouTube Music Night was a successful, unforgettable musical event, with all the ‘feels’ produced by Gigi’s powerful vocals and the beats courtesy of her bandmates Jon Cruz, Romeo Marquez, Jake Manalo, and LA Arquero.
Gigi finished the show with a heartwarming medley of Kapamilya Christmas Station IDs Star Ng Pasko, Thank You for the Love, Just Love Ngayong Pasko, Ikaw ang Liwanag at Ligaya, and Andito Tayo Para sa Isa’t-Isa.
Netizens, of course, caught the vibes:
