Ardent shippers of Karina Bautista and Aljon Mendoza, a.k.a. KarJon, surely had a great, kilig-filled weekend as their highly anticipated reunion project, the mini online series “Hex Boyfriend,” can be now streamed on ABS-CBN Entertainment’s official YouTube channel!

All of its five episodes have been available for on-demand streaming since last Friday, October 20, and have already amassed thousands of views as of this writing. Helmed by Director Paco Sta. Maria and written by screenwriter Bel Ilag, it follows the story of main characters Raya and Chris, two young adults whose lives got intertwined after Raya and her mom Lupe moved into her late great grandma’s abandoned abode located just across the house that Chris shares with his folk healer father Jess and cousin Patrick.

Just on its pilot episode, KarJon immediately captured us with their impressive portrayals of their respective roles Raya and Chris. Karina really pulled off playing the enigmatic, fierce, yet soft-hearted Raya, who initially appears quite terrifying for others because aside from displaying her ferocious facet, she also loves to wear dark lipstick and all-black outfits. Aljon, on the other hand, has gotten us smitten with his boy-next-door charms and happy-go-lucky disposition.

Apart from KarJon, we’re also impressed by the performances of their fellow Pinoy Big Brother Otso alumni Ashley del Mundo, Angela Tungol, and Batit Espiritu. At the same time, seasoned thespians Anna Luna and Rafa Siguion-Reyna both awed us with their performances as Lupe and Jess, respectively. Anna truly amused us with her depiction of the loving, supportive, palaban, and wacky Lupe, who is believed to have inherited the black magic powers of her predecessors, while Rafa did a good job in playing the role of Jess, a doting yet overprotective father. Newbie Pat Liwanag also got us entertained with her portrayal of gossipmonger and scammer Maureen.

While many have probably assumed that its narrative is going to be completely cliché and predictable based on the trailer, we really suggest that you wait until you see the ending as there’s going to be an unexpected and shocking twist care of Apey Obera’s character named Dyosa. That particular part would remind us to not easily believe whatever we see on social media nor hear from gossips as it’s truly important for us to confirm the veracity of everything first before jumping to conclusions for us to not become victims of fake news.

Whether you have same background as Raya and Chris or not, you can certainly identify with them as they deal with same woes that people their age, or even not, are going through.

For sure, there were people who have struggled with prejudice and belongingness, but Raya is a perfect example of how we should react towards it, as well as against bullies and naysayers. We should learn how to defend ourselves without stooping down to their levels, as well as to stay true ourselves because the right people will surely appreciate us for who we really are. And it’s great that she has her optimistic mom by her side, who has been her inspiration in embracing her true self.

Chris, on the other hand, has surely touched the lives of the ones who are being hindered by their domineering and protective parents to go after their real ambitions or what their heart really yearns for. Of course, we get where Jess is coming from since he’s just being parent who wants nothing but the best for his child. However, we can all agree that too much strictness can be suffocating, especially for young adults like Chris, who must be already given freedom to decide, learn, and fly on their own. At the same time, we’re astonished by how he wanted for his unico hijo to be a doctor instead of becoming a folk healer or albularyo like him, fearing that the society would ridicule or not accept him.

We admire both Raya and Chris for firmly standing for what they believe in is right, as well as for being the friend that one another needs as they confront their respective dilemmas. We also loved it when Raya advised Chris to not let anger take root in your heart because it will completely consume him, and then reminded him that it’s sometimes okay to strike back in order for us to teach the person who crossed us to never do it again.

Besides, the love story of their characters is a great reminder of how truly magical, surprising, and sometimes scary love can be, but it’s definitely worth a shot nonetheless.

Apart from the values that “Hex Boyfriend” have imparted to us, we were also treated to a number of kilig encounters between Karina and Aljon, especially at the ending, which many of us have surely missed seeing ever since we last saw them together on “Viral Scandal.” Their chemistry is indeed palpable, to the point that we instantly get kilig even though their bodies just touch and their eyes met, without them having to say a word. Thus, we are looking forward to see them again in another project, and we wish that it’s going to be longer than five episodes because that’s really bitin.

So, just in case you’re looking for something different and enjoyable to watch, “Hex Boyfriend” offers the right amount of kilig, humor, and drama that makes it a spooktacular and hextraordinary watch. Go, see it now on ABS-CBN Entertainment’s YouTube channel!
