With decades worth of showbiz experience and awards under her belt, Maricel Soriano is a queen rising above the rest. Hailed as the Diamond Star, we continue to see her shine in countless movies and shows.
If you’re a huge fan of the Maricel, then you definitely understand why she’s called “The Taray Queen”. Her long list of dramas prove how she’s exceptional at doing intense scenes and delivering biting slaps to the face.
Her iconic sampal is so well-known that many other artists even consider it an honor to be slapped by the Diamond Star herself. And when they do, stars make sure to reveal the details.
Vice Ganda once experienced it when they filmed the 2013 movie, “Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy” (2013) claiming, “Pagkatapos, hagulgol talaga ako. Sobrang hagulgol ko, akala nila dahil sa eksena, pero nasasaktan ako talaga."
Magandang Buhay host Jolina Magdangal had once been on the receiving end of the actress’ award winning slap and shared how it’s truly hurtful but also a once in a lifetime experience. So when the great Maricel was a guest on the daytime show, co-host Melai Cantiveros couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a taste of the Diamond Star’s sampal.
Many would think it’s because of the feisty or mataray type of characters given to Maricel, but she proves that it’s just her natural talent to bring out the right amount of fierceness in the role.
We saw this in her recent portrayal of the gentle Nanay Lucing in Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin. As motherly as she is, Maricel did not hesitate to deliver that feisty acting she is known for when the story calls for it.
In a Kapamilya Confessions revelation, her Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin co-star Rita Avila revealed she felt uneasy and nervous when she learned she would be on the receiving end of Maricel’s sampal, and likewise do it on her. But as actresses playing their roles, they would accept all the rigorous demands, including getting slapped, and would laugh it off after shooting the intense scene.
Remember the serye’s “War of the Century” where Nanay Lucing, Rita’s Belen, Marissa (Jodi Sta. Maria), and Ellice (Iza Calzado) all have a double face-off? It’s one of the most intense and memorable scenes for us and for Maricel as well.
In this interview on Hotspot with DJ Jhai Ho, Maricel claimed that a lot of work was done before they perfected the scene. Since it was a physical fight scene, she shared that the actresses still had to ensure that they were safe and uninjured after so a very detailed choreography of how they would move and hit each other was put in place. Plus, they had to make it look real despite being scripted.
With regards to the realness of her slaps, Maricel confirms that what she certainly gives it her all, “Mahirap kasi mandaya ng sampal kaya ‘di ko kayang mandaya.”
Though, she really doesn’t enjoy inflicting that pain to her fellow actors so she has to make sure that all the emotion she puts, the blockings she does, and the lines she delivers are just perfect in order to get it right in one-take, as much as possible.
As Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin just ended, you may feel disheartened that we will not see Maricel as our dear Nanay Lucing anymore, but it is not the end. We will actually keep on seeing the Diamond Star in more Kapamilya shows soon; hopefully, with more compelling scenes featuring her one-of-a-kind sampalan. No other details yet but there is definitely something in the works!
