Hotspot: Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina introduces NICKL Entertainment, talks about online charity show “Pakpak ng Pangarap”

From delighting us with her blockbuster masterpieces through the years, premier movie and teleserye director Cathy Garcia-Molina is now in pursuit of discovering and honing new breeds of talents through the entertainment that she and her friends in the industry have established – NICKL ENTERTAINMENT.

In her latest chikahan with DJ Jhai Ho in the special episode of Hotspot on Friday, October 30, the celebrated filmmaker, she revealed that they were supposed to produce the concert of Korean pop group BTS, which is already cancelled due to the pandemic. Thus, they just came up with the idea of producing live events and concerts online, as well as scouting for untapped talents from different parts of the country and giving them their well-deserved break in the local entertainment scene.

“Kasi naniniwala ako, maraming talent d’yan kailangan lang ng break. Kailangan lang ng venue para maipamalas ang kanilang galing,” Direk Cathy said.

With the primary vision to form our very own Pinoy Pop and make them popular internationally, along with the aspiration to create their own all-original team, the “Gimme A Break” contest was created that catered to songwriters, musical arrangers, and dance choreographers.

In fact, they’re bound to release a Christmas album comprised of tracks that were originally-written by their contestants, which will be posted one-by-one on NICKL Entertainment’s social media platforms starting on November 6.

And while we’re looking forward to that, the production company is slated to mount an online charity show dubbed “Pakpak ng Pangarap” this Saturday, October 31, from 9am to 3pm, which aims to raise funds to buy 100 laptops for 100 deserving students.

Participants have the chance to get dibs on the pre-loved items from celebrity donors via different modes of exciting auctions – silent, public, and “spin-a-wheel” – which Direk Cathy enthusiastically discussed in this episode. The bids for the auctions, as well as monetary donations, can be made through their website

Making the series of auctions entertaining are the performances from Kapamilya singers that include Gary Valenciano, Darren Espanto, and Inigo Pascual. The whole proceeds of this event will all go to the chosen beneficiaries of this campaign.

“Actually, kumakatok po talaga kami sa mga puso ninyong lahat mga Kapamilya, lalo na ‘yong mga and’yan sa abroad na may sobra, na sana you find it in your heart to help us,” Direk Cathy conveyed.

When it comes to her upcoming projects, she divulged that she’s unsure yet since the pandemic and the ABS-CBN disenfranchisement take a toll on the productions. But she assured that Star Cinema has been working to provide entertainment for all of us in the past months.

“Rest assured po na talaga naman pong walang humpay ang kame-meeting namin, thinking of a project that is, hindi very now, but what you need. Sana po maibigay namin ang pangangailangan n’yo [na] ma-entertain sa panahon ngayon. Those are in our minds,” she stated.

Then she continued, “I still have one film under contract sa Star Cinema and I will fulfill it. It’s just a matter of when it will be possible and saka siyempre sana, gusto ko sa cinema na. Sana makabalik na tayo sa sinehan kasi nothing beats watching film sa sinehan.”
