We live in a day and age where we not only experienced the global pandemic’s anniversary, but we’re also about to spend another Holy Week under a community lockdown. It’s easy to fall into despair in these trying times but we must to look within our lives and recognize the things (big or little) that people have done for us.
To commemorate Holy Week, let’s also look at some of the most memorable characters in Kapamilya teleseryes whose unconditional love for their loved ones compelled them to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Baristo, La Luna Sangre
Sandrino (Richard Gutierrez) ambushes LLU where Tristan’s (Daniel Padilla) grandparents are. Baristo (Joross Gamboa) leads a rescue team to help them escape. He bravely faces Sandrino, dedicating their fight to everyone who suffered at Sandrino’s hands — including his close friends and allies Matteo and Lia, and their daughter and the new ‘Itinakda’ Malia (Kathryn Bernardo). Baristo gave it his all but he is finished with one strong blow from Sandrino.
When Salvador’s (Nonie Buencamino) armed men confront Samantha (Shaina Magdayao), Ana (Julia Montes) comes to the rescue just in the nick of time. Ana insists that Samantha leaves with her child to safety but Samantha insists that if they will put an end to their fight against Salvador, they need to do that together. Much to the sisters’ surprise, Salvador crashes the moment and shoots one of his men out of disappointment for the arrival of the police. Samantha realizes an opening and shoots Salvador on the leg to give a window for Ana and her child to escape. But as they’re about to, Salvador takes Samantha’s life as she protects Ana one last time.
In Sandugo, Ulysses (Gardo Versoza) toys with the emotions of brothers JC (Ejay Falcon) and Leo (Aljur Abrenica) in an intense gunfight. Leo is left to battle Ulysses in hand-to-hand combat until Ulysses finds an opportunity to pick up the gun and point it at Leo. Before he pulls the trigger, Cordelia (Vina Morales) comes rushing in to save his son, Leo, much to Ulysses’ dismay. With her last breath, Cordelia and Ulysses declare their love for each other as she begs Ulysses to stop the fighting.
Mia Agbayani, 24/7
In 24/7, Mia Agbayani (Julia Montes) is both a mother and a cop whose priorities in life become blurred when her son’s life is put on the line due to the politicization and hoarding of medicines by Claudio Jacinto (Edu Manzano} to a new and deadly virus.
Mia had to choose between her civic duty and her motherly instinct to keep her son alive. In the end, she decides to break into Jacinto’s lab to take what the people need — the medicine. In the end, Mia dies at the hands of Jacinto’s men but not before successfully arranging an interception of the medicine with her trusted friend and Xavier’s (Prinz Skie Bautista) eventual guardian Charlotte (Anna Luna).
David, Love Thy Woman
Sister rivalry is at a whole new level with Jia (Kim Chiu) and Dana (Yam Concepcion) in Love Thy Woman. Dana confronts Jia at the parking lot out of anguish for all the things she claims Jia stole from her. They are met with a hitman who first fires at Dana. Jia instantly forgets her quarrel with her sister and runs to her rescue where she’s shot at the arm as well. Dana rushes to her sister's side as David (Xian Lim) battles it out with the hitman. Just as David thought he got the upper hand, he turned to Jia and Dana and got shot at the back by the hitman.
Gab, Bagong Umaga
Bagong Umaga was filled with all sorts of drama and family love but our vote goes to Gab’s (Ali Abinal) decision to save his brother Ely (Tony Labrusca) from a speeding vehicle when he was about to cross the street. What makes this scene even more heartbreaking was how the brothers had just made plans to bond over computer games, to which Ely had to turn down because of a previous engagement. We’re left with a weeping Ely who held his unconscious brother in his arms, in disbelief of what had just happened.
Blue, Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin
The rivalry between Marissa (Jodi Sta. Maria) and Ellice (Iza Calzado) was a show-stopper on Ang Sa Iyo Ay Sa Akin but we’ll have to give our pick for the ultimate sacrifice to Blue (Nico Antonio). Blue jumps at the chance to save Marissa from an on-going assault to her life after the legal battle between the Ceñidoza Pearls and La Sierra reaches peak intensity. After all the sacrifices and support Blue has given to Marissa, he is still there for her until the very end.
Marissa, Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin
Marissa’s sacrifice was least expected which is why it made the most impact to the viewers of this epic show. At a party which Cesar (Simon Ibarra) crashes to threaten the life of Hope (Kira Balinger). Everyone was left immobile until Hope became successful in breaking free from Cesar’s hold. Gabriel Villarosa (Sam Milby) and Avelino Mansueto Jr. (Joseph Marco) went head to head with Cesar but they were beaten to the ground. As Cesar points his gun to Ellice, Marissa swoops in the last minute to save the day even after everything they’ve been through.
Honorable and heroic, these sacrifices of our beloved teleserye characters have been etched deeply in our hearts, inspiring us to give a little more love—and, yes sacrifice—to those dear to us.
