Darren Espanto’s staggering rise from an aspiring young singer to a sought-after “Total Performer”

Five years after staging his first-ever birthday and major solo concert at the Mall of Asia Arena in 2015, fast-rising multi-faceted artist Darren Espanto is about to treat his fans again with another sure-fire gig exactly on his 19th birthday on May 24!

Titled D’ Birthday Concert from Home: A Benefit Concert, the show will be livestreamed on Darren’s official Facebook page at 8pm this coming Sunday, with Gary Valenciano and Moira Dela Torre as among of his special guests. It will be for the benefit of the Pantawid ng Pag-ibig initiative of ABS-CBN, which is also one of the official media partners of his record label MCA Music Inc. for this event.

But before we let ourselves be amazed anew of the Total Performer’s enthralling performances, let’s first take a look on his incredible and remarkable journey from being an aspiring singer to becoming one of his generation’s most sought-after personalities!

At an early age, Darren has already showcased his singing prowess by joining different competitions in Canada, wherein his whole family is based. But it was only through his notable stint in the first season of The Voice Kids Philippines that he was able to gain most traction.

Right from the very first time that we saw him on the Blind Auditions in 2014, he instantly wowed us with his captivating rendition of Jessie J’s “Domino” that made coaches Sarah Geronimo and Bamboo Mañalac turn their chairs.

Consistently impressing the Popstar Royalty, the other coaches, and the spectators with his versatile vocal prowess and delighting overall stage presence, he was able to power through up to the finale wherein he finished as the 1st runner-up.

Darren might have fell short in his bid to become the first-ever The Voice Kids Philippines champion, but we all knew that a truly spectacular career in the local music scene awaits him. Fresh from his extraordinary stint in the reality singing contest, he immediately appeared in a slew of Kapamilya television programs, such as ASAP, It’s Showtime, and Gandang Gabi Vice along with his fellow finalists.

On that same year, he became a part of ABS-CBN’s talent management arm Star Magic and then signed a record and management deal with MCA Music Inc (Universal Records Philippines), which produced  as well his first full-length self-titled studio album that is now a certified Double Platinum. Among the tracks included in Darren is his chart-topping single “In Love Ako Sa ‘Yo”.

Aside from that, his live shows “The Total Performance Concert” held in Music Museum and “Homecoming Concert” held in Edmonton, Canada were staged in the latter part of 2014. He also had his debut in the Carnegie Hall when he headlined the 4th Outstanding Filipino-Americans in New York Awards.

Certainly, 2015 had been an unforgettable year for the young superstar for two important milestones happened to him that year. First was when he was chosen to sing the evangelical song “Tell The World Of His Love” during Pope Francis momentous visit here in the Philippines. And the other one was the staging of his first major solo and birthday concert at the Mall of Asia Arena, through which he was able to set a record for being the youngest artist to ever perform on the venue at the age of 14.

Darren’s second album “Be With Me”, which is now Platinum, was released in 2016. On that same year, two concerts were staged for him, with his second major solo show D Total Experience being the first for that year. It was then followed by the intimate digital gig dubbed The Other Side of Darren organized by ABS-CBN’s music portal OneMusicPH, through its One Music Digital Concert Series.

In 2017, he was picked to collaborate with Malaysian pop star Nik Qistina for her single “Young Hearts”. He was then able to showcase his acting chops for the first time when he was tapped to play the role of Yohan, the younger brother of Kathryn Bernardo’s character George in the 2018 blockbuster hit “The Hows Of Us.” The elite teen squad “ASAP G!” was also launched that year, which included him and fellow ASAP mainstays and teen pop singers Ylona Garcia, Kyle Echarri, Jeremy Glinoga, Jayda Avanzado, and Isabella Vinzon. His UNSTOPPABLE birthday concert was held as well in 2018.

2019 had been a prolific one for Darren for the strings of projects he scored that year.

First was his notable appearance in the grand finals of Singer 2019 in China, the same reality competition where KZ Tandingan used to join a year before, as one of the performers alongside acts from Russia, Kazakhstan, and China.

It’s true, we’ll make a better day. Just you and me. #Singer2019

Disney then handpicked him to cover “A Whole New World” opposite Morissette Amon for the Philippine promotion of the live action movie Aladdin.

He was also the representative of the country in the theme song of the 2019 Korean Innovation Cultural Summit titled “Side By Side”, which was sung by singers from the member countries of the ASEAN-ROK (Association of Southeast Asian Nations – Republic of Korea) during its Commemoration Summit held in Busan, South Korea, and even performed in the piano music gala of renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang.

And lastly, his latest single “Sasagipin Kita” astonishingly debuted to number 1 on Philippine music charts just on the first day of its release last November.

Aside from these, the Total Performer had other accomplishments as well, which includes being an opening act to the Manila leg of the world tours of international pop superstars Jessie J, Selena Gomez, and Alex Aiono, and a plethora of accolades and recognitions from various award-giving bodies.
