Two years after they got to work for the first time in the celebrity impersonation competition Your Face Sounds Familiar Season 3 in 2021, host Luis Manzano had the chance to be reunited with one of its contestants, Christian Bables, as he had him as his guest in the latest episode of his YouTube channel’s online talk show, “Luis Listens.”

After some hilarious pleasantries, their conversation commenced with Christian’s notable performance in the controversial primetime series Dirty Linen as Max Dionisio, a character that was “way far different from who I am” according to him. It was a totally challenging feat for him as he felt like carrying with him the pain of his character.

It might not be his first time to be part of a teleserye, but Christian still experienced difficulty, especially with regard to letting go of his character. In his initial foray into making series, he recounted how shocked he was upon the realization that it’s a totally different arena from movies. And one of the challenges he learned to confront is having to take good care of his mental health as a person in order to avoid bringing with him the world of his character.

Being in the local entertainment scene for eight years already has allowed him to slowly reap the fruits of his hard work. He’s thankful that the higher-ups have been entrusting him with projects, and that he’s able to get the things that he used to not have before. Besides, he also confirmed that the construction of his house is about to start this coming January 2024.

According to him, he got inspired by one of his chats with Luis during their Your Face Sounds Familiar days, in which they tackled acquiring real-estate properties while they are still young and are completely able to work hard for it.

Ang saya kasi before, pinangarap ko lang siya not just for myself, but for my family. I really wanted to build a happy home for myself, for my mom, and for my brothers. Pangarap kong magkaroon ng masayang pamilya, ng masayang bahay dahil hindi ako lumaki sa gano’n,” Christian related when asked how he feels about making that dream of his come true.

He expounded that he and his stepfather used to be not on good terms, to the point that his motivation to finish his studies and eventually find a job was for him to be able to leave their home and live on his own. But much to his amazement, everything has been falling into place when it comes to their family now that he has already achieved his ambitions. However, his dream of having a happy home is still something that they’re striving for, especially him.

When it comes to his goals for 2024, Christian expressed his desire to work with Luis in a drama project, which they both find hilarious. But on a serious note, he really wishes to share the screen with the one and only Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos-Recto, to whom a huge chunk of his process as an actor is inspired by her.

The 31-year-old award-winning actor recalled an interview of Vilma that he got to watch before, wherein she mentioned the “believe in the moment” technique that helped her give a compelling performance in one of her films. Until now, he still holds to that acting style which works when he applies it along with the other styles he learned.

He’s also one of those young thespians who dreams of working with, and even being slapped by the one and only Diamond Star Maricel Soriano. Meanwhile, his dream of working with Philippine showbiz legends Joel Torre and John Arcilla had already been fulfilled through Dirty Linen.

Their conversation then veered to his relationship with his other co-star Jennica Garcia, to whom he’s being shipped due to the undeniable chemistry that they exuded just on the very first time that they worked together in the aforementioned series.

Hindi inaasahan ‘yon kasi wala lang, umarte lang naman kami. Kung papaano kami as actors, kung paano kami naturally magbatuhan, malaking tulong ‘yong sobra kaming sanggang-magkaibigan. Kaya alam namin ‘yong bawat kilos, ‘yong bigay ng bawat isa,” he said.

Christian also clarified the real score between them, saying that the people are probably just seeing the product of their beautiful friendship. He added, “wala namang panliligaw na nagaganap, o naganap.”

In the eight years that he’s been in the industry, Christian is arguably best known for playing gay roles, through which he is able to showcase his versatility as an actor. And among his most notable performances was in the 2016 flick “Die Beautiful,” in which his portrayal of a transwoman named Barbs earned him the “Best Supporting Actor Award” at the Gawad Urian Awards.

As Luis mentioned the classic 2009 drama film “In My Life” he starred alongside his mom Vilma and seasoned actor John Lloyd Cruz and tackled the process that he and John Lloyd went through in order to relate with their characters and deliver a compelling performance, Christian mentioned that it was his culminating activity during his stint in the Star Magic workshop.

Even though his character in the said film was gay, Luis still wishes to take on a complex gay character and someone who’s mentally challenged. Christian agreed to the latter, imparting that he dreams of portraying the role of Moon Sang-tae, a man in the autism spectrum astoundingly played by seasoned Korean actor Oh Jung-se in the hit Korean series “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay.” He also wants to try portraying a suicide bomber as he’s curious to know their motivation and the things going on in their mind as they commit an act of terrorism.

With regard to the most challenging project he’s ever done, Christian said that it would be the 2018 independent drama film “Signal Rock,” which brought him the Best Leading Actor trophy from the 5th Hanoi International Film Festival.

They then had a spontaneous “Acting 101” session, wherein Christian served as the mentor and Luis as his protégé. It turned out into a comedic one as the former wasn’t able to hold his laughter as the latter kept on showing off his being a natural comic regardless of the scene that Christian had given him.
