Alex was born as Catherine Mae Cruz Gonzaga on January 16, 1988 in Taytay, Rizal to Crisanta Cruz Gonzaga and incumbent Vice Mayor Carlito Gonzaga. She is the younger sister of Ultimate Multimedia Star Toni Gonzaga but has made a name for herself through impressive talent in hosting, acting, singing, and dancing. She also adds her own sass to all her performances.

She first appeared on TV through the ABS-CBN sitcom "Let's Go" (2006-2007) as Alex, one of the college students in the story set in a dormitory. Since then, she used the said nickname onscreen. The program continued until the fourth season called "Gokada Go!" (2007), which revolves around the lives of several teenagers about to enter college.

After Let's Go and Gokada Go!, Alex joined the cast of different shows in ABS-CBN. She played the role of Chorva Ayala Gomez, the bubbly and supportive best friend of the lead, in the primetime series "Pangarap na Bituin" (2007) topbilled by Sarah Geronimo, Rica Peralejo, Nikki Gil, and Maja Salvador.

She was also part of "My Girl" (2008), an adaptation of the South Korean drama series of the same title. It was starred by Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, and Enchong Dee.

Alex has two Your Song Presents episodes: "Without You" in 2008 as Jen and "My Only Hope" in 2008 as Fifi. She also explored other opportunities in rival networks only to come back to her Kapamilya home in 2013. In her return, she made guest appearances in Toda Max, Minute to Win It, and a few episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya.
