Everybody loves a good throwback, and one good entry would be the popular 2004 fantasy series “Spirits,” which starred Maja Salvador and Rayver Cruz and featured teen characters with supernatural powers. Aside from trying to save their hometown from an epidemic, they also journeyed through teenage struggles, friendships, and self-discovery that resonated with viewers.
Before the year ends, the iconic series created by Chito Roño is making a comeback as the digital series “Spirits Reawaken,” which streams on ABS-CBN’s new streaming service iWant, starting November 17.
The reboot will introduce a new breed of teen stars who are all ready to prove themselves and make their mark in the industry and defend the earth against an alien invasion as their characters.
Get to know more about them here:
One of the most promising young actors today, Grae Fernandez hails from a family of renowned and established actors. He has had roles in several teleseryes, including the remake of the hit series “Pangako Sa ’Yo,” “Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin,” “Bridges of Love,” “A Love to Last,” and in CineMo’s “Funny Ka, Pare Ko.” Apart from acting, he was also part of the all-male group Gimme 5 and released hit singles after another.
Set to play Red in “Spirits Awaken,” Grae will further prove his acting chops as he gives life to his character, who possesses the power of telekinesis.
Jairus Aquino is not new to the fantasy and teen drama genres. He became popular for his notable character in the 2006 Kapamilya series “Super Inggo,” Pareng Jomar, the ever-supportive sidekick of superhero Inggo. He also starred in the live-action fantasy series “Kung Fu Kids” and teen show “Luv U.” Jairus transitioned into his teenage years as the love team partner of Sharlene San Pedro, appeared in numerous teleseryes such as “Nathaniel,” “Langit Lupa,” and “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” and joined music channel MYX as a VJ.
In the “Spirits” reboot, he will portray Jesse, who possesses the power to command electricity.
Former child star Bugoy Carino shot to fame as an actor and dancer at a very young age after being named the grand kiddie questor of “Star Circle Kid Quest” in 2009. Since then, Bugoy has proven his mettle in both comedy and drama, winning numerous awards for his stellar performances on television and film. At ten, he bagged his first starring role in “E-boy” and spent most of his childhood making viewers laugh in “Goin’ Bulilit.”
iWant users will see more of his fun and quirky side as Nato, who has the ability to talk to extraterrestrial beings.
Kapamilya viewers are already familiar with the girl-next-door Kira Balinger, who appeared in “The Story of Us” and “The Greatest Love,” and starred in some episodes of “Ipaglaban Mo” and “Maalaala Mo Kaya.” She is also a regular in “ASAP,” performing with the all-girl group “BFF5” along with other female Kapamilya teen stars.
In “Spirits Reawaken,” she will play Maya, who has the power of precognition.
Another new face is Chantal Videla, a Star Magic Circle 2018 batch member and Filipino-Argentinian who started out in the industry as a commercial model. We recently saw her slay the red carpet with her “Spirits” co-star Grae in the ABS-CBN Ball 2018. One of ABS-CBN’s most promising female stars, Chantal will also be part of an upcoming Kapamilya teleserye.
Chantal, dubbed by netizens as the next Liza Soberano, is set to take on her biggest role yet as Gabbie, the breakout character played by Maja Salvador in the original “Spirits.” Despite not having any powers, Gabbie will use her strengths – the values of love and compassion – in order to help her friends defeat their enemies.
One of the cast’s freshest faces, Patrick Quiroz was recently seen in “Wansapanataym Presents: Ikaw ang GHOSTo Ko,” acting alongside the tandem of Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber. This year, he also signed with Star Music’s sub-label Star Pop and released his first single called “Ikaw Pa Rin.”
Now it is his time to shine as one of the lead characters in “Spirits” as he plays Lloyd, the meek and loner member of the gang, who possesses the ability of being in two places at once.
Viewers may start streaming “Spirits Awaken,” directed by Topel Lee, starting November 17 on the iWant, which will be available to users in the country in iOS and Android apps and through the web.
