Filipino singers have long been recognized globally.
The pitch, tonal quality, elevation, calisthenics, and showmanship that’s quite identified with any Filipino contender in international competitions have been much acclaimed.
From Pilita Corrales, Kuh Ledesma, Dulce and Regine Velasquez to Dessa, Rizza Navales, Jed Madela, and Sarah Geronimo, the Filipino singing voice has lorded it over in various competitions around the world, making the Philippines a respected and rich source of vocal talent.
This year, another exceptional Pinoy talent breaks ground in another major global singing tilt.
KZ Tandingan, who also wowed us in local reality-based competitions, will take the stage in the prestigious Chinese singing competition Singer 2018. The first-ever X-Factor Philippines grand champion will show her impressive vocal skills against a world-class lineup of competitors, including pop stars Jessie J from the UK, Angela Chang and Sam Lee from Taiwan, Sandy Lam from Hong Kong, and Coco Lee from the US.
KZ brings her signature “Soul Supreme” style in holding her own against the illustrious performers. On Friday, February 9, an episode of Singer 2018 will air KZ’s performance.
Judging from her past showings, KZ can definitely ace it.
She mesmerized everyone with her rendition of The Carpenters’ “Superstar,” which launched her career after being named as the X-Factor Philippines Grand Winner.
KZ also bagged the top prize in the grand finals of the Himig Handog contest in 2014 with her rendition of Edwin Marollano’s “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako”.
She had been always the undisputed champion, even with her bar-none knowledge of OPM songs after her winning P1 million in “The Singing Bee” that same year. She swept the two initial rounds and the final face-off guessing all the missing lyrics of Itchyworms’ “Gusto Ko Lamang Sa Buhay” correctly.
In 2015, KZ again impressed audiences with her impersonation of iconic singers and won twice in Your Face Sounds Familiar. She ended up third runner-up overall.
She scored a win with this impression of rapper Abra and her version of his song “Gayuma.”
But what is really praiseworthy is her impersonation of the same singer she is competing against in Singer 2018, Jessie J, and sang her worldwide hit, “Price Tag,” for another weekly victory. A very interesting coincidence.
Truly, KZ is a welcome addition to the Filipino singing luminaries that continue to bring honor to the nation. With her upcoming appearance on Singing 2018, KZ is surely a strong contender in the contest with a solid, unforgettable performance the whole world will take notice and start her journey as the next international Filipino singing star.
