Why be a bida when you can be a kontrabida?
Being an antagonist is cool. It usually means having power over someone, killer palaban lines, and of course, fashown outfits and va-va-voom hair! But haters are definitely gonna hate your character—and sometimes, even you. The question is: Are you brave enough to handle the heat?
Yam Concepcion accepted the challenge—which is a clear indication that we should bow down to this kween.
The 30-year-old Kapamilya actress dared to take a different path and pursued a kontrabida role—which, in return, catapulted her into stardom. Yam portrayed the asawa-turned-kabit ‘Jade’ of the top-rating TV series ‘Halik’. She earned the ire of viewers and became a trending topic online for her character’s well...unfaithfulness and bevy of mistakes (mostly made with her equally infamous ‘sissy’!) in the teleserye. But hey, bad publicity is still publicity.
That is until the posts got real nasty.
Yam dealt with the situation cool-headedly. So, you might want to take your cue from the ‘Halik’ actress on how to handle such situations.
Take it lightly. If you can’t beat them, join in the fun then! Haters only have one goal: To make you feel bad. It’s not a reflection of who you are, anyway—but a reflection of their negative thoughts. So why give them that power over you? Just let them be and brush it all off. Yam even tried reading mean tweets about her and her character. Watch the LOL-worthy video here!
Speak up when it’s too much. One should always choose their battles. But if people are starting to cross the line, don’t be afraid to let them know. Yam once called out a netizen for sharing a post meant to shame one of her previous roles. Still, the incident only pushed the actress to prove her naysayers wrong.
“That is why I’m working hard also to prove that that’s not only what I can do,” shared Yam during her previous interview in an episode of ‘Tonight With Boy Abunda’. You know what they say: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!
Be thankful. In an interview in ‘Magandang Buhay’, the ‘Halik’ actress expressed her gratitude towards the viewers—especially to her so-called ‘haters’. “Maraming salamat dahil marami kaming napapagalit na tao, umiinit ang ulo. Maraming natutuwa, maraming natututo, maraming bumubukas ang isip sa ganitong klaseng sitwasyon sa buhay. Sana ay makatulong kami sa inyo at sana gabi-gabi ay mayroon kayong matutunan sa show namin," says Yam.
Being in the show business is already hard. You have to deal with haters constantly, especially if you decided to take the kontrabida path. But daring to refuse the usual bida roles to be remembered as an effective protagonist is something one should be proud of. Just take the ‘haters’ situation in stride, the way Yam did.
Just like Yam Concepcion,
dare to challenge the norm.
Dare to defy expectations.
