In the three successful years of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, he’s the overall main antagonist who made Ricardo Dalisay’s (Coco Martin) life a living hell throughout its six seasons.
As we yearn to see him more on the top-rating Primetime series for their clashes never failed to make our jaws drop, keep our eyes glued to our television screens, and brought us at the edge of our seats every weeknight, it’s now, sadly, already impossible. Aside from the fact that his character Don Emilio Syquia, who’s also known by his alternative name Don Gustavo Torralba, was killed by Cardo during their nail-biting encounter in Sitio Sto. Niño, our beloved and revered Eddie Garcia has peacefully joined our Creator on June 20 at the age of 90.
Thus, as a tribute to his formidable greatness and tremendously prolific career as an actor, let’s take a look back at seven of the most unforgettable and riveting scenes shared by the one and only “Manoy” of Philippine entertainment with this generation’s Primetime King Coco Martin on FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano through this Kapamilya Toplist.
Don Emilio and Cardo have never been cordial ever since they met for the first time at the penitentiary where they were both imprisoned, but were enclosed in different wards. Theirs was a case of “hate at first sight” as they totally abhorred each other, which was, most of the time, triggered by the old man’s sarcasm and irritating remarks.
When our beloved bida was already emancipated, Don Emilio swore to hunt him and his family down once he got out of prison, which didn’t faze Cardo as he looked forward on seeing and facing him again in the outside world.
From the incessant scorching word fights they had in prison, their next confrontations turned into bloody skirmishes as he continued to be the titular character’s worst nightmare and vilest enemy for being involved in various illegal activities. From being the leader of the mafia and the human and drug trafficking syndicate ran by his equally-corrupt son-in-law Tomas (Albert Martinez) and grandson Joaquin (Arjo Atayde), he became the partner of the fraudulent Senator Mateo de Silva (Joko Diaz) in their illegal drug-trading business that funded the latter’s election campaign.
He was out of Cardo’s sight for quite some time and returned as Don Gustavo Torralba, the owner of the mining site debauched government officials Renato Hipolito (John Arcilla) and Lucas Cabrera (Edu Manzano) wanted to venture with. It was also on that same site wherein he faced his death after Cardo was able to severely injure him, and eventually killed him by shooting down the helicopter he used to escape.
As we bid goodbye to this showbiz legend, a huge “thank you” for your unsurpassable contribution to the Philippine entertainment industry and for making our TV and movie viewing extra thrilling and enjoyable through your remarkable performances. Don Emilio and Don Gustavo, along with the other characters you portrayed in the past seven decades, will forever be etched in our minds and hearts.
