Watch MarKap’s endearing discussion about Kdramas, comedy, and longevity in showbiz as they recall their interesting ‘firsts.’

Kapamilya Chat asked Gelli de Belen and Cris Villanueva aka MarKap to avid fans of 2 Good 2 Be True to take on the Game of Firsts. We started off with the first Korean drama they loved. Gelli says her Kdrama addiction started in 2008 when her friend and fellow actress Candy Pangilinan introduced her to the “Coffee Prince” series, “Sabi niya, ‘Try mo lang.’ Hala! No’ng napanood ko, inaabot ako ng alas-kwatro ng umaga. Nakakahiya sa asawa ko saka sa mga anak ko, napupuyat ako dahil sa Kdrama.”

Meanwhile, Cris recently joined the club with “It’s Okay Not To be Okay.” From there, they swapped opinions about the characters and portrayals in the wildly popular mental health drama.

We also learned that Cris is a true-blue Kapamilya since his first TV show was ABS-CBN’s “Talents Unlimited.” As he recalled, ABS-CBN just reopened at the time. Meanwhile, Gelli appeared in a Laurice Guillen movie titled “Kasal” when she was around four years old. As for her first TV show, she remembers it was “Kutitap” on Channel 9 when she was eight.

From there, Cris mentions he once asked Gelli how it feels growing up in the limelight, to which she would reply, “Parang normal lang.” She was raised with typical parenting styles and values; the only difference is she started working at such a young age.

They went on to share their advice to stars who want to achieve longevity in showbiz. Cris underscores the weight of humility and talent, “Kasi ang talagang magbibigay sa’yo ng trabaho ay hindi pangalan o sponsors kundi ‘yung talent.”

Gelli adds that you must give your best however small the role is, “Kahit na ano pa ‘yan, galingan mo at makikita mo, aayos at aayos ang trabaho mo.” More importantly, aim for excellence than mere fame,” It’s more the work than the popularity. In the beginning, it will get you mileage, money. But if you want to stay long in the industry, it all boils down to your work. Sometimes even if you are talented but if you are not focused or if you do not do your best, o kung mas binibigyan mo ng importansya ‘yung popularity at nakakalimutan mo ‘yung work, eh, makakalimutan ka rin ng tao siguro.” After all, you would want to be remembered for your body of work than trivial things like what you wore to an event or who your lover was.

Gelli and Cris’ expertise was evident as they share their process of preparing for an intense scene. They don’t need music or anything to get in the zone, although that’s a welcome help. For them, emotional connection to the character is more essential. He explains, “I just get in the scene. Bihira ako pumasok doon sa katulad ng iba na aalalahanin mo ‘yung nawala mong kamag-anak o ilalagay mo ‘yung mukha ng magulang mo doon sa character. I put myself doon sa words na binibitawan ko at sa feelings na gusto kong i-convey.”

Gelli adds, “I-o-open mo talaga ang puso mo’t magiging vulnerable ka to be that character.”

It may look easy but it’s not. Cris further relates that he puts in more effort in comedy, “Pinag-iisipan ko talaga. Kailangan awkward ako dito, so kailangan hanapin mo ‘yun. Tapos mamaya, si Kap Rosales ako na serious. So, ‘yung nagsasabi na madali lang ang comedy, hindi po, talent ‘yan.” Gelli, who is more experienced in comedy, says it requires perfect timing and a lot of practice.

Going back to the game, their first overseas trip was to Hong Kong because it’s nearer and cheaper. The first recipe they mastered in the chicken is carbonara for her, and adobo for him. Cris proudly announces that makes the best adobo, to which Gelli reacts, “Eh ‘di magluto ka kaya minsan tapos dalhin mo sa taping para matikman namin.”

The two seemingly share the same taste in music. When asked about the first songs in their playlist, Gelli was happy that Cris mentioned “Blackbird” by The Beatles. She also likes that song, although her playlist depends on her mood. But apart from that, Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and Janet Jackson’s “Together Again” are her ultimate pick-me-up tracks.

The MarKap ship has finally sailed, so better not miss an episode of 2 Good 2 Be True, weeknights, on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, and A2Z.
